Spring 2
This half term, we have been exploring numbers to 50. We have focussed on their place value, by partitioning them to identify their tens and ones. We have also explored length, height, mass and volume, using an array of equipment to measure and weigh objects.
As writers, we have been creating poems and stories about dinosaurs. We have imagined what it would be like to have a dinosaur as a pet, and what we would do with them!. We tried to use lots of descriptive detail in our stories to bring them alive.
As scientists, we have been investigating and discussing trees. We have been exploring the parts of a tree and what their functions are and even did some bark-rubbing to help us understand them better.
In DT this half term, we have been looking at the importance of hygiene when cooking, and we have also practiced our cutting skills to safely and accurately cut fruit for our fruit kebabs.
As historians, we have learnt about Mary Anning, who she was and the lasting impact of what she found. We went on a trip to Wollaton Hall to meet Mary Anning and look at some fossils. We have discovered lots of fossils and prehistoric animals this half-term.
PE this half-term has been all about dance. We looked at different dances from across the world, including Indian and Kenyan dancing.
As musicians, we have explored sound patterns though fairytales and have developed our rhythm skills.
Spring 1
This half term, we have been exploring numbers to 20. We have focussed on their place value and methods of addition and subtraction, such as using number lines and using our knowledge of number bonds to add the ones together first.
As writers, we have channelled our inner pirate and have written descriptive wanted posters to capture a naughty pirate on the loose! We used adjectives and fronted adverbials to give detail to our posters. We then wrote instructions on how to make a parrot, making sure we used time fronted adverbials and imperative verbs so the instructions are clear to follow.
As Scientists, we have been investigating and discussing the seasons and weather. We have been observing what happens to trees across the seasons and how the weather changes day-to-day and over the seasons.
The artist we have been learning about this half term is Orla Kielly and her nature inspired printing. We took inspiration from Orla Kielly and created our own pirate bandanas with a repeated pattern using printing.
As geographers, we have been answering the big question: What are the four countries in the United Kingdom? We have discussed what the United Kingdom is, what countries are in it and what language we can use to describe their positions. We then looked at what seas/oceans surround the United Kingdom; what capital cities make up the United Kingdom and how London is similar/different to Nottingham.
PE this half term has been all about running, jumping, throwing and catching. We played lots of different games which incorporated different skills.

Autumn 2
In DT, we have been learning how to be designers and make moving pictures. We have learnt how to make our own sliders and leavers. After getting inspiration from different pop-up books, we had a go at creating our own Christmas inspired moving pictures.
In English, we have been reading ‘The Jolly Postman’ and ‘Paddington Bears Post’ to help us learn how to become letter writers. We have been looking at the different features that a letter must contain in preparation for our letter to Santa.
As Historians, we have been exploring our own personal history. We have looked back at photos of ourselves as babies and tried to guess who was who. We made our own personal timeline of our life so far including big life events such as when we learnt to walk, ride a bike and our first day of school.
As Scientists, we have been looking at different types of materials. We have learnt new language to describe the properties of the materials we have explored, such as transparent and opaque.
As mathematicians, we have been developing our problem-solving skills by working systematically to figure out all the possible answers. We have also been looking at 3D shapes: working on the names and properties that they hold.
In PE, we have become gymnasts, where we have learnt lots of different types of rolls, jumps and shapes we can make with our bodies.
In ICT, we have been learning how to use our mouse and space bar, and have created wonderful pictures on computers, using our careful mouse skills.
Autumn 1
English
In our English, we focused on the book ‘Supertato’ to create descriptive pieces of writing to describe our very own Supertato hero that we created. We also explored the book ‘Charlie’s Superhero Underpants’ where we used our story writing skills to retell the story.
Maths
As mathematicians, we have thoroughly explored numbers to 10 and compared them using excellent vocabulary such as ‘greater than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’. We then began our topic of addition and subtraction by focusing on number bonds and fact families.
Science
Science this half term has been all about the parts of the body As scientists, we discussed different parts of the body, including parts outside the body, like our hands, and inside the body, like our brain. We then conducted an experiment all about our five senses, where we got to taste some yummy foods
Art
As artists, we have been drawing self portraits inspired by Vincent Van Gogh. We used sketching pencils to explore different types of lines to create our masterpieces.
PE
In PE, we have focused on the fundamental skills of throwing and catching and how we can incorporate these skills into competitive games like bench ball.
Music
As musicians, we have been inspired by superhero music and how musicians use tempo and pitch to create tension in their songs.
Geography
We have been exploring our local area in geography – discovering what features we have and need around us, including shops, dentists and a doctors.
Summer 2025
English:
In English we have been reading the story ‘The snail and the whale’. As writers we have been creating our own postcards pretending we have been on an adventure with the whale! We have been developing our vocabulary by using adjectives to make our writing even better!
Maths:
As mathematicians we have been working on our knowledge of ½ and ¼. As mathematicians we have also been working on our place value to 100. We have started to learn how to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour.
DT:
As designers we have been looking at different structures. We learnt how when you add a cross it makes things stronger. We had a go at making our own structures using art straws.
Science:
In Science we have been looking at animals including humans. We have learnt lots of new vocabulary including herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, amphibians, reptiles and lots more! We have had a go at sorting animals into different categories.
History:
In History we have been looking at the seaside. We have been comparing what the seaside looks like now to what it did in the Victorian era. We enjoyed looking at the different artefacts from the past including how the used to have ice creams before cones!!
