Summer 2025

English:

In English we have been reading the story ‘The snail and the whale’. As writers we have been creating our own postcards pretending we have been on an adventure with the whale! We have been developing our vocabulary by using adjectives to make our writing even better!

Maths:

As mathematicians we have been working on our knowledge of ½ and ¼. As mathematicians we have also been working on our place value to 100.  We have started to learn how to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour.

DT:

As designers we have been looking at different structures. We learnt how when you add a cross it makes things stronger. We had a go at making our own structures using art straws.

Science:

In Science we have been looking at animals including humans. We have learnt lots of new vocabulary including herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, amphibians, reptiles and lots more! We have had a go at sorting animals into different categories.

History:

In History we have been looking at the seaside. We have been comparing what the seaside looks like now to what it did in the Victorian era. We enjoyed looking at the different artefacts from the past including how the used to have ice creams before cones!!

Summer 2025

Spring 2025

In Yr1 as writers we have been working on our skills to inform people by creating ‘Wanted Posters’. After reading the story ‘The Night Pirates’ we created our own pirates to use as a stimulus for our own posters. As writers we have also been working on our ability to follow and write our own instructions. First, we followed instructions to make and eat a jam sandwich! Then we wrote our own instructions telling people how to make a parrot craft!

As mathematicians we have been working on our place value within 20. We have also been using number lines to help us count forwards and backwards when solving a number problem. We have used our number knowledge to help us work out missing number problems and have been building on our doubling skills.

As Artists we have been using our printing skills to design hats, mugs, and sofas all inspired by the artist Orla Kieley. We made one design and used this to make a repeated pattern for our work.

As Scientists we have been learning all about the 4 different seasons. We have observed the different types of weather that occur in each season and noticed the changes that happen in each one.

In Geography we have been looking at the UK and the 4 different countries that are part of it. We have been working on our map skills and labelling these countries on our own map.

Spring 2

In Design and Technology we have been learning how to prepare fruit and vegetables. We have practiced using the claw and bridge technique to cut vegetables.

As designers we designed our own fruit skewer using our favourite fruits that we tasted. Once we designed our skewers we enjoyed making them for our picnic together!

As writers we have been creating our own acrostic poems linked to our knowledge on DINOSAURS!

We have started to think about what we would do if we had a pet dinosaur, ready for us to write our own version of the story. We have been developing our vocabulary and using lots of adjectives to make our work better!

As readers we have read the story ‘If I had a dinosaur…’ We have been changing parts of the story to create our own version.

As mathematicians we have been working on our place value knowledge of numbers up to 50. As mathematicians we have also been working on our addition and subtraction knowledge using number lines to help us.

As Scientists we have been looking at trees this half term. We have been looking at different types of leaves and we had a go at drawing on the veins of a leaf. We have been naming the different parts of a tree, including the roots, bark, branches and the leaves.

As Historians we have been learning about Mary Anning. We have looked at fossils and linked it to learning about dinosaurs. We enjoyed our school trip to Wollaton Hall, where we met ‘Mary Anning’ herself! Who told us all about her job as a palaeontologist!

Autumn 2024

In English, we have been reading a variety of books including Supertato, Charlie’s Superhero underpants and the Jolly Postman. We have made our own Supertato and used our growing knowledge of adjectives to describe them.

We used role play to retell the stories and have looked at the features of a letter. We have written letters to Santa and asked him questions using the correct punctuation. We have also explored different poems and wrote our own firework poem using onomatopoeia and exciting adjectives.

As Mathematicians, we have been focussing on addition and subtraction. We have taken our learning outside and solved subtractions by jumping back on a life size number line.

We have used 10s frames, our fingers and number lines to help with our adding and taking away.

In RE, we have been looking at ‘Celebrations and Beliefs’. We have discussed the meaning of Hannukah, Easter and Christmas and have used hot seating skills to really understand the characters in these stories. We have made stars of David and have enjoyed watching animations to deepen our understanding of different celebrations around the world.

As Designers we have been exploring the use of levers, pivots and sliders to make a moving picture. We have investigated a number of pop up books to see how they work. We have experimented by cutting out pictures to create a slider and a lever and we have finally created our own moving picture using these skills.

As Scientists we have been learning about different materials. We have explored the properties of these materials and investigated which material would be best to create a cape for Supertato.

In Geography, we have explored our local area and have been on a walk around Rise Park. In History, we have been investigating our own personal history and have recorded physical changes that occur.
